Phillies Recap: September 2, 2009

W - Penny (8-8), L - Happ (10-4)

To his credit, Jay Happ battled the Giants the whole game. He pitched behind all night and had a high pitch count, and yet, kept the team in it for a while. However, the Phillies offense was unable to get anything going against Brad Penny. The impatience of the Phils hitters enabled Penny to go eight strong and get the game to the Giants bullpen to seal the victory. The Phillies and Giants have traded shut outs now, with San Francisco taking this one by a score of 4-0.

The Phils' rookie J.A. Happ went six innings, allowing four earned runs and another two homers. Despite looking solid early on, Happ continued to work in jams and battled a high pitch count, which ultimately cost him as he surrendered homers to Juan Uribe and Aaron Rowand in the sixth inning. That would be his last, as he gave up eight hits and a walk. Happ did have seven strikeouts, but little else went well for the lefty.

In Brad Penny's debut for the Giants, he did not disappoint. Penny went eight shut out innings, while surrendering just five hits. The Phillies never really threatened, except in the fourth inning, when they got their first two men on, before stranding them. Penny worked the plate well and limited his pitch count which enabled him to go deep into the game. He walked one and struck out two.

As the Phillies offense goes, so go the Phillies. Despite the fact that their starters have been pitching exceptionally well lately, without run support, there can be no wins. For the last week, the Phillies hitters have done just enough at the plate to get by. This is not a good time to be slumping at the dish, as they finish off their series with one of the best pitching teams in the league. They will need a strong showing tomorrow night to avoid losing the series. On the season, the Phillies drop to 76-54.
