W - Hamels (9-9), L - Figueroa (2-5), S - Madson (7)
The Phillies came out early and put some runs on the board for Cole Hamels. Though they could have blown the game wide open, their offense again sputtered against Nelson Figueroa. However, it didn't matter with Hamels on the mound, as he was pretty good all night long against the Mets. By the end of a rainy, cool night in Philadelphia, the Phils pulled out a close win by a final tally of 4-2.
Cole Hamels battled a high pitch count more than anything else. The Mets hitters were patient and worked deep counts against him, but rarely threatened too seriously. Hamels managed to get deep into the game and gave the Phillies a real boost from their starting rotation. On the evening, Hamels went 6.2 innings allowing seven hits and one earned run. He walked just one and struck out six. He was by no means dominant, but he gave a solid effort and got the Phillies the win they needed.
To his credit, Nelson Figueroa gave the Mets a pretty good start. Though he danced through the rain drops, both literally and figuratively, he only allowed two runs to score. The Phillies hitters did an okay job getting some runs on the board, but continued to encounter trouble with chances to put the game away all night. Figueroa went 5.1 innings, giving up 9 hits and 5 walks. He did have three strike outs on the night as well. The Mets bullpen came in and allowed a pair of late runs that helped seal their fate.
This was a good win for the Phillies who put together just enough pitching and hitting to win the game. It was the Phillies' 80th win of the season and paired with the Marlins' loss, their magic number takes a nice step down to 17. More importantly, the Phillies looked like a quality team and started their home series on a high note. They will need to show that they can keep this momentum going through the weekend.
