Phillies Preview: August 1, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies (59-42) at San Francisco Giants (56-47)
9:05pm ET - AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA

Joe Blanton, RHP (7-4, 4.11) v. Tim Lincecum, RHP (11-3, 2.30)

Game number 102 of the season for the Phillies is also game three of a four-game set with the Giants out west. After the teams split the first two games, Joe Blanton has the tough task of taking the mound against the NL's defending Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum.

However, Blanton has pitched well of late, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.55 ERA since June 1. He has been the Phillies' most consistent starter during that time, pitching at least seven innings in seven of those outings. Current Giants are batting .250 in 63 career plate appearances against Blanton and the Phillies' righty has a 1-2 lifetime record against them in five overall starts. Last season, Blanton faced the Giants once and had a poor outing, giving up seven earned runs in just four innings of work, as a member of the Oakland Athletics.

On the other side of the matchup, arguably the best young pitcher in the game will be toeing the rubber for the third-place Giants. Nevertheless, San Francisco is very much in the playoff hunt and will continue to lean on its co-ace to continue his dominance. Lincecum is 11-3 this season and leads the National League with 183 strikeouts. Current Phillies are batting just .192 off of Lincecum in 78 career plate appearances. For his career, he is 1-0 in four starts against the Phillies with a 4.68 ERA. Last season, Lincecum devoured the Phillies in two starts posting a 1-0 record and 1.29 ERA.

Needless to say, this will be a tough matchup for the Phillies, who come into play with a six game lead in the NL East over the Florida Marlins. The offense has struggled lately, especially in situational hitting and the task is no easier tonight. A patient approach at the plate and timely hits will help get Lincecum out of the game early and perhaps provide Blanton with the support he needs to win his eighth game of the season.
