Phillies Preview: Marlins Series 8/7 - 8/9

Florida Marlins (55-53) at Philadelphia Phillies (61-45)

The NL East leading Phillies will host the playoff hopeful Marlins in a pivotal three game series in Philadelphia. Despite the fact that Florida comes limping into town, the Phillies need a strong performance this weekend to maintain their strangle-hold on the division. So far this season, the Phils have dominated the Fish, going 7-2. However they dropped two of three in a series in Philadelphia in late May.

The Marlins will be sending three of their best arms to the mound over the weekend, as Ricky Nolasco, Sean West, and Josh Johnson are lined up. The Phillies counter with Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels, and Jamie Moyer. The Marlins are coming off of an embarrassing three-game sweep at Washington while the Phillies won two of three against the Rockies this week.

7:35pm - Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
Ricky Nolasco, RHP (7-7, 5.00) v. Joe Blanton, RHP (7-5, 4.02)

Joe Blanton is coming off of a tough loss at the hands of Tim Lincecum and the Giants. Blanton has a 2-1 record with a 1.84 ERA in his last four starts, and he beat the Marlins earlier this season. He has been one of the most consistent starters for the Phillies, and will try to get back on the winning side against Ricky Nolasco. In his last three starts, Nolasco has been red hot, with a 1-0 record and a miniscule 1.39 ERA. Nolasco is lifetime 4-3 against the Phillies, and he earned a no decision in a 6-5 loss to them earlier this year. This promises to be quite a pitchers' duel.

7:05pm - Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
Sean West, LHP (3-4, 4.91) v. Cole Hamels, LHP (7-6, 4.68)

The Phillies will try to get Cole Hamels back on track as they face off with rookie lefty Sean West. Hamels looked little like his usual self in his last start against the Giants, in which he gave up six runs in five innings. Hamels beat the Marlins several weeks ago but lifetime is only 2-4 against them with a 3.95 ERA. Sean West has been average as a rookie starter for Florida. However, lately the book has been out on him as he has surrendered five earned runs in each of his last three starts, carrying a 9.00 ERA in that time. West has never faced the Phillies.

August 9, 2009
1:35pm - Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
Josh Johnson, RHP (10-2, 2.98) v. Jamie Moyer, LHP (10-8, 5.55)

If death and taxes are certainties, then Jamie Moyer dominating the Marlins is a relative certainty as well. Moyer has a storied career against the Fish, in which he has gone 13-2 with a 2.83 ERA. This year has been no different as Moyer has gone 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA against them. However, the Marlins will counter with one of the up-and-coming pitching stars in the league, Josh Johnson. Johnson is lifetime 3-1 against the Phillies with a 3.66 ERA. This season, Johnson held the Phillies scoreless over seven innings in a 7-3 loss to the Phillies. The finale will be a tough test for Philly.
