Phillies Preview: August 2, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies (59-43) at San Francisco Giants (57-47)
4:05pm ET - AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA

Cole Hamels, LHP (7-5, 4.42) v. Barry Zito, LHP (6-10, 4.54)

The finale of the Phillies' west coast road trip features a matchup of lefties as Cole Hamels takes on Barry Zito of the Giants. San Francisco has taken two of the first three games of the series, dropping the Phillies to 3-3 on their road trip. Philadelphia will look to end the week on a high note before returning home for a much needed day off.

Cole Hamels has not been his usual, dominant self this season, sporting an unusually high 4.42 ERA. He has been better as of late though, going 3-0 in his last five starts, with a 3.00 ERA. Hamels has also enjoyed success against current Giants hitters, who are hitting a combined .149 lifetime off the southpaw in 71 plate appearances. In four career starts against the Giants, Hamels is 3-0 with a 4.03 ERA. Last season, he was 1-0 in two starts, but carried a high 5.54 ERA against the team by the bay.

It is no secret that Barry Zito has struggled since joining the Giants three years ago. The former Cy Young Award winner is 27-40 pitching for the national league and has had a 4.75 ERA during that time. However, current Phillies are hitting just .221 off of him in their 101 career plate appearances. And, in his last three starts, Zito has been a sharp 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA. Since Zito spent so many season in the American League, pitching for the Athletics, he only has three career starts against the Phillies, going 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA. Last season Zito did not face the Phillies.

Despite the Phillies' successes against left-handers this season, this proves to be a tough matchup for them. Zito has a big, sweeping action on his delivery and one of the best curveballs in the game, which should be especially difficult on the heart of the order. However, Zito does have a tendency to be wild, so if the Phillies can be patient and Hamels pitches to his ability, they should have a good chance to win this afternoon.
